Which Parameter Better Measures Orange Peel? DOI or RIQ?

Distinctiveness of Image (DOI) and Reflected Image Quality (RIQ) are parameters used for measuring the quality of a highly polished, coated or chromed surface.

  • DOI is not sensitive to low amount of Orange peel on highest quality surfaces
  • RIQ has a higher resolution for a wider range of low to high gloss surface.
  • RIQ has more proportionate response to orange peel on wider range of surface finishes that correlate well with human perception

Two Highly reflective surfaces having very small changes in texture shows very little change in DOI, but will appear different visually.

Reducing the sensing distance around the specular angle and measuring the reflected distorted light around it, produces a higher resolution response with greater linearity, more in line with the visual experience.
